Production:
Unidentified Staffordshire factory
Production:
Wood, Enoch
(Possibly)
White lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels. A seated woman playing the lute with a dog seated on her knees.
White earthenware, moulded, lead-glazed and painted in blue, yellow, flesh pink, salmon-pink, red, purple, yellowish-brown, brown and black enamels. The figure is supported on a rectangular base with incurved corners which is closed and glazed underneath and has an oval concave centre. Yellow lines imitating gilding run round its upper and lower edges. The lady is seated on a high-backed salmon-pink chair with curving legs and hoof feet, which has a yellow shawl draped over its back. She holds the lute in her left hand and has her right hand over the strings. She has brown hair with a floral ornament on the front of her head, a white frill round her neck with a blue bow at the back, and a yellowish-brown necklace. Her yellowish-brown sack back dress has elbow-length sleeves with white flounces, and a criss-cross patterned stomacher decorated with two blue rosettes. The skirt is open below the waist to show a purple petticoat with a yellow fringe across the lower edge. Her shoes are yellow with red pompoms on top. Her lapdog is white and black. Under the chair there is another lute with three books on top of it.

Rackham in 1935 attributed this earthenware model to Enoch Wood's factory after the end of his partnership with James Caldwell in 1818.
This model was copied from a Derby porcelain figure of a lady playing a lute paired with a gentleman playing a flute which were in production before 1780. A 19th century Derby porcelain pair produced c. 1806-25 is in the Fitzwilliam, C.111-1932 (gentleman) and C.112-1932 (Lady).
