Tin-glazed earthenware, known as faïence in France, had been made in Nevers since the late 1580s. Its production there was at its peak during the reign of Louis XIV (1661-1715). Much of the faïence produced was decorated in blue and manganese-purple with designs influenced by figures and scenes on Chinese porcelain. The forms of vases and bottles also echoed Chinese forms.
