Description

Salt-glazed with incised, applied, and hand-modelled decoration, brown dip, and salt-glaze: a hare hunt, an inn sign of Queen Ann between Beefeaters, Boscobel Oaks each harbouring a head of future Charles II, and inscription, ‘Drink about Boys to the Pious Memory of Queen Ann/Mary Bayley/1730’

Grey-buff stoneware, thrown and turned, with applied moulded reliefs, hand-modelled trees, and incised decoration and inscription. The upper part had a thin brown wash applied before salt-glazing. Cylindrical, with two pairs of turned bands round the base and one below the rim, and applied loop handle with a longitudinal depression between two ridges. Decorated on the front with an applied inn sign of Queen Ann flanked by standing Beefeaters, with an incised church below, and on either side of the handle, hand-modelled trees, each having an incised head of the future Charles II in the middle. Below, going in a clockwise direction, is a huntsman, and eight hounds chasing a hare. Round the top is an incised inscription: ‘Drink about Boys to the Pious Memory of Queen Ann/Mary Bayley/1730’

Note

This mug is one of a group with a hunt proceeding in a clock-wise direction round the body. Accessioned as Fulham, it is now attributed to the Vauxhall Pottery. The earliest example of this type is dated 1713 and the latest 1744
