Saint-Cloud made boxes were made in a wide variety of shapes apart from the classic circular, oval, rectangular and bombé forms of gold or silver boxes. Some were moulded in the form of animals, or Oriental or European figures, and others in the form of a bank with a figure reclining on thetop, like this one. They were provided with silver mounts to ensure a close fit for the lid which formed the base. Where these bear the charge and/or discharge mark for the current sous-fermier, the marks provide a seven year date range for the completion of the box. Many bear the marks for 1732-8, 1738-44 or 1744-50, and may occasionally have other marks..
