Valentine card
Small valentine of heavy, embossed paper with gilded embossed paper scene of courting couples, a man on one knee at lower right, trees above and around a small, glass mirror at the centre, framed with white paper flowers. The gilded paper scene is mounted on paper springs. Hand-coloured flowers and a die-cut scrap mounted at upper centre and lower centre with a printed paper scroll at lower centre bearing the motto: 'FONDLY THINE SWEET VALENTINE'. Inside is the handwritten inscription: 'Pene / 1864'. See also no. 31, which is another valentine apparently sent by or to the same person, 'Pene' (possibly an abbreviation of 'Penelope') and dated '1863'.
