Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
Lace-paper with scraps of foliage and a goldfinch at lower centre. A hand-coloured lithographed cut-out of Cupid with doves and blue net 'cloud' at upper centre. A gilt-edged oval flap is attached at the centre and decorated with a chromolithograph of flowers and the motto: 'True love watches over thee'. A hand-written inscription in blue ink above reads: 'What you are to me' and the flap lifts up to reveal a folded strip of pink paper which when unfolded, reveals a series of hand-written epithets relating to the intended recipient: 'Duck o' Diamonds / Pet of Pearls / Ruby Red / Gem of Girls ...'. DOBBS, KIDD & CO. blind-embossed along the lower edge of the central oval. The inside of the card is blank. The firm of Henry Dobbs traded as Dobbs, Kidd & Co. from 1851 into the 1890s.
