Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
White lace-paper of a design of flowers and leaves with a bow at lower centre. A central oval window with a rice-paper blind, hand-painted in watercolour and gouache with a design of flowers, leaves and a bird. The edges of the rice-paper are painted with a border of alternating red and blue lines. A paper swag affixed at lower centre has a lithographed verse in gold ink: 'A heart that boasts a / tender flame / Sincere and constant too / Long time has tried your / love to claim, / And vows 'twill e'er be true'. The front paper is adhered to the back paper. A hand-written inscription in black ink (presumably by the sender) on the inside right-hand page is visible through the lace-paper front and can be read by carefully lifting the lower right corner of the front paper and the album leaf simultaneously: 'To be beloved is all I need / And when I love I love indeed / AHL'.
